Fixing problems and restoring health with general surgery.
“Growing up, I was inspired by the doctors in my community and came to see medicine as a noble calling. In college at East Tennessee State University, I enjoyed human physiology and other sciences, so choosing to become a physician was an easy decision.
“During my medical training, I was drawn to general surgery. I loved the operating room environment and the way surgery requires both investigative and technical skill. Surgery lets me fix my patients’ problems, to relieve pain, and improve their quality of life… and I couldn't ask for a better way to serve my patients and I take pride in being honest with them.”
A personal approach that makes a difference.
“I joined the Piedmont Surgical Clinic in 1992. In addition to our team’s outstanding surgical training and expertise, we offer a level of personal care that I feel really makes a difference. We make sure you understand what we’re doing for you. We answer your questions and keep you involved in your care. We take the time to make sure you know how important you are to us. I know surgery isn’t easy to get through, but with time, attention and compassion from your surgeon, we can make it easier.”
Outside his busy practice, Dr. Croley enjoys life with his family here in Concord. He enjoys fishing and spending time outdoors. Dr. Croley is an avid Tennessee Volunteers and Carolina Panthers fan. He supports the Cabarrus County Boys & Girls Club and the Cabarrus Victims Assistance Network (CVAN).
Joseph P. Simpson, MD, FACS

Fellow: American College of Surgeons
Fellow: Southeastern Surgical Congress
General Surgery Residency: Medical University of South Carolina
MD: Bowman Grey School of Medicine, Wake Forest University
The general surgeon’s role in your good health.
“I was fortunate to have mentors that fostered my interest in medicine and I knew early on that I would be a physician. I went to medical school intending to specialize in either pediatrics or orthopedics, but all that changed when I discovered general surgery.
“The well-trained general surgeon is capable of taking care of a patient in virtually any situation. We diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems and often solve them definitively, which really appeals to me as a doctor.”
Good communication keeps you involved in your care.
“As your surgeon, I’m here not just to perform a procedure, but to personally take care of you, from our first meeting on. I want you to be involved in your care. I’ll explain your condition and treatment options and answer your questions. It’s not my job to tell you what to do, but to educate you so that you can make informed decisions.
“When you trust me to be your surgeon, I see it as a real privilege. In return I owe you my compassion and full attention before surgery and throughout the recovery process. Though we are all different at Piedmont Surgical Clinic, my colleagues and I share this philosophy. It’s a difference I think you’ll notice right from the start.”
Dr. Simpson and his wife are both Concord natives and are happy raising their three children here. In his free time, he and his family make the most of the outdoors, mountain biking, waterskiing, hunting and skeet shooting. The Simpson family is active in their church, scouting, high school sports and other community activities.
Dr. Simpson has been with Piedmont Surgical Clinic since 2000 after serving as a general surgeon in the United States Air Force.
Michael A. Houston, MD
Board-Certified: General Surgery & Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery
Fellow: American College of Surgeons
Surgical Critical Care Fellowship: University of North Carolina Hospitals
General Surgery Residency: University of North Carolina Hospitals
MD: University of North Carolina School of Medicine
Blending science, service and healing.
“When I first went into medical school, I’d planned to become a rural family doctor. As I learned more about general surgery, I knew that’s what I really wanted to do. General surgeons are called on to help people with everything from trauma to common health concerns that require an operation.
“Treating life threatening problems was appealing to me. I continued my medical training by completing a critical care fellowship, where I took care of the very sickest people at the UNC hospital, in the burn unit and the surgical intensive care unit. I think I’m a naturally calm, compassionate person and believe that helps me in the most serious situations.
“I see general surgery as a blend of science, service to my patients and as an expression of my faith. Ultimately, it’s my opportunity to participate in healing and to build relationships with the people in my community who count on me.”
Dedicated to compassionate, personal care.
“If you need surgery, you and your loved ones will probably have many questions and concerns. It’s important to me that you know what to expect and feel that you are in the best possible hands. I will always be honest and upfront with you in a caring way. I’m proud to be part of Piedmont Surgical Clinic. We all believe that compassion is as important to what we do as the surgical care we provide.”
Dr. Houston is a Statesville native and has been with Piedmont Surgical Clinic since 2007. He is married to his high school sweetheart, who is a pediatrician here in Concord. They have two young children. Dr. Houston spends his free time with his family, staying active in his church and fishing in the mountains and at the coast whenever he’s able. |
